SLEEP STEPS
BY KATE LONGOBARDI
This book will empower, educate, and nurture you to adopt a holistic approach to sleep disturbances, tap into the power of maternal intuition, and be confident with what to expect from your baby throughout the first 18 months of life.
What will you learn within Sleep Steps?
-
This is the first and likely most important step to approaching sleep disturbances, in my opinion.
Maternal mental health significantly impacts the way in which a Mother approaches sleep disturbances. Before she can embark on the journey to improving her baby’s sleep, she first needs to look within and ensure she has the emotional capacity to hold space for her baby throughout these changes / transitions. To be well in herself first is imperative.
This topic covers Mum-Guilt, Mum-Rage, Matrescence, Self-Love, and includes (actually) achievable and sustainable solutions for each! This guidance and information was sourced from experts in the field of Matrescence Advocacy, Perinatal Occupational Therapy, and Psychology.
-
It can feel overwhelming to hear all of the conflicting advice that is out there. Sleep Steps eliminates the need to Google desperately in the middle of the night and presents you with evidence-based, empowering information and tools so that you have the confidence to respond to sleep in ways that align with your parenting values.
Sleep Steps breaks down the biology of sleep to help you better understand what is biologically normal of your baby and establish expectations that are reflective of that.
-
There is a lot of noise and fear around the impact that food can have on sleep. Sleep Steps focuses on celebrating the importance food has in relation to baby & mothers’ sleep, debunking myths that food is the reason for all night wakes, and discusses how food can actually SUPPORT sleep.
Not an expert in nutrition, this information was sourced from a qualified Nutritional Consultant and a Registered Dietician to help you feel informed, empowered, & equipped to also support nutrition as well as sleep.
-
Nurture has developed a 5-step model that promotes better sleep for the entire family. Sleep Steps not only articulates HOW you can reach your goals for sleep, but it is also backed up by evidence-based information (referenced) and all tools have been tried and tested by hundreds of families during 1:1 support to help you to establish an individualised approach to your baby’s unique needs & preferences.
In no way will you ever be encouraged to do “cry it out” or any other form of behaviour modification. Nurture encourages and equips parents to address their sleep disturbances in respectful and responsive ways.
-
It can feel overwhelming to read information about knowing your baby’s sleep needs, then staring at your baby and having NO idea where to even begin.
Within Sleep Steps you will have access to multiple variations of ‘normal’ and sustainable rhythms. Nurture does not advocate for strict, inflexible, and rigid routines - but teaches you how you can adapt these rhythms to suit your baby’s needs as well as your lifestyle.
-
EVERYTHING.
Absolutely everything you can think of that could impact your baby’s sleep in the first 18 months of life - Sleep Steps covers and articulates HOW to improve sleep AND support your baby.
Sleep regressions, nap transitions, early rising, short naps, false starts, waking hourly after midnight, waking 10 minutes after going to sleep, waking habitually, and MORE.
-
Sleep Steps talks you through the WHEN, the WHY, and the HOWs of night weaning your toddler.
Sleep Steps explores the relationship between breastfeeding and sleep. With expert guidance and advice from ex-midwife of 20 years and IBCLC, this section will have you feeling equipped and empowered throughout this transition.
-
Sleep Steps helps you to uncover the various ways in which a baby can be settled to sleep.
These techniques are respectful of each baby’s unique sensory preferences, as well as their temperament.
Of course your baby is forever growing and evolving and so what works for them at 8 weeks old, isn’t necessarily going to be what works for them at 17 months old. Therefore Sleep Steps equips you with a variety of age-appropriate ways you can settle for your baby.
This topic explores the difference between settling and resettling, and guides you step-by-step in incorporating these into your everyday.
-
Sickness and teething often take the wrap for sleep disturbances but there are many times where they are not the root cause of the issue. Parents can go months and months on very little sleep because they think that what their baby is going through is beyond their control. Sleep Steps debunks the myths around teething/sickness and sleep.
With widsom from Oral Health Specialists and Naturopaths, you will feel educated and empowered to make informed decisions around your little one’s oral and overall health.
I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT HAVING AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE BIOLOGY OR MECHANICS BEHIND SLEEP CAN ALTER YOUR OVERALL PERCEPTION OF SLEEP COMPLETELY.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.
KNOWLEDGE IS FREEING.
— Me, I said that
As a Mum of 3 boys (3 and under), it is safe to say that I have experienced my fair share of tired times. I have lived and breathed sleep deprivation. I have witnessed the strain that a lack of sleep can have on a Mother’s own mental, physical, and spiritual well-being, as well as her relationships with others and overall perspective on life.
I have also felt overwhelmed by the murky, contradicting waters of the sleep industry. I too have felt bombarded with opinions, advice, and societal expectations.
I wrote Sleep Steps with the hope that I can help YOU feel joy, love, wonder, and excitement during what has the potential to be the most exhausting and life-changing 18 months of your life.
Sleep doesn’t have to be all consuming, and through Sleep Steps, I will show you step-by-step HOW.

Transitioning to care (no matter the form) is a BIG deal, I don’t care what anyone else says! You (& your baby) are allowed to have big feelings about this, you’re allowed to be excited, you’re allowed to be both! You’re allowed to be nervous and fearful of what might happen to your baby’s sleep in new environments with new people, and you’re also allowed to take a more “go-with-it” approach. It’s YOUR journey together, and there is no right or wrong!
The Childcare Directory is allllllllllll about offering practical & respectful solutions to juggling the mental load of work & mum-life, managing mum-guilt, navigating sleep, facilitating attachment relationships, and supporting separation.
If you’ve been pondering over how your family will adjust to this change, this mini-guide is filled with insightful and respectful answers that are easy to absorb and implement.
Questions that may be circling around in your mind…
How is Sleep Steps any different to other sleep guides or books that are out there?
This is the ONLY resource (in all of my research) that focuses on more than the sleep disturbance. Sleep Steps takes a deeper look into maternal mental health, focuses on debunking common misconceptions & toxic societal beliefs around baby sleep, normalises NORMAL, and equips parents to confidently & sustainably navigate their way through absolutely EVERY possible sleep disturbance they may be met with in the first 18 months of life. Sleep Steps leaves no stone unturned.
What made you come up with the name “Sleep Steps”?
The name of the eBook came to be surprisingly quickly and effortlessly. I wanted something that very concisely articulated exactly what you would expect to receive from this book. By following the 5-Step Model for Better Sleep, I am beyond confident that you WILL get better sleep and (providing they are realistic) reach your goals.
Is Sleep Steps a one-size-fits all approach?
NO! If you’ve been following along this journey with me for any length of time you will know how deeply passionate I am about celebrating the individuality of each baby and parent. Sleep Steps is another reflection of that.
Within Sleep Steps I help you to break down societal expectations, unlearn what you believe to be true about infant sleep, help you to discover the temperamental, sensory, nutritional, sleep, and connection-based needs of your baby AND establish a rhythm and lifestyle that makes you feel rested.
Why were the specific experts chosen to be a part of Sleep Steps?
This process was the MOST time-consuming. It took MONTHS to research and investigate different experts in their fields. These women had to not only possess the necessary qualifications, but also had to hold a passion for respecting & acknowledging the Mother as deeply as Nurture does. It has been an honour to meet with, collaborate, and learn from these incredible women.
Will I find cry-it-out forms of behaviour modification within Sleep Steps?
Heck. No.
Nurture is all about responsive parenting.
There is an entire section within the book that explains WHY cry-it-out is not encouraged, and it goes into the impacts this can have on a child’s development.
The age range includes newborns. Does Sleep Steps teach you to sleep train a newborn baby?
Sleep Steps does not teach you to sleep “train” anyone. If you want to sleep “train” you baby, I’m sorry this space is not going to align with you (and that’s okay!).
Sleep is a biological process. It is not something that CAN or NEEDS to be taught. What Sleep Steps does teach throughout is that you can establish healthy foundations for sleep from the very beginning.
The 5-Step Model for Better Sleep is in no way overwhelming or all-consuming. It is (in my opinion) the only way to successfully meet all of your baby’s needs AND your own.
Sleep Steps is the secret to a happy, healthy relationship with your baby’s sleep.
